35 millions of lily flowers blooming at the same time!

A natural miracle happens in a natural depression of the clay plain 35 km north of Maltahohe where millions of lily flowers bloom for a few days.  This natural wonder only happens when the water level is about 30 cm for a few days and we were there almost by conincidence at the perfect time.  When we arrived, we could not believe our eyes... seeing this large cover of flowers.  According to Sandhof farm, the natural dam is about 700 ha and most of it is covered by the lilies – Crinum paludosum - Amaryllidacae familly.  At a rate of about 10 plants per m2 and a cover of 50 % of the surface, this means there are about 35 millions of lilies!

I was told that a beetle, endemic to the area and called the elephant beetle was responsible for the pollination of the flowers... not sure about that as I only found less than 10 after a 3-hour intensive search!  The beetle is the red lily weevil, Brachycerus ornatus.

We overnight camped on top of the hill for N$50 each – where the only facility was a bin – and so we could enjoy sunset and sunrise on the magic flowers!
